What IS an Advance Directive anyway?
You may have seen references to an Advanced Directive when you visit your doctor or dentist. But what is it? An AD is a legally binding document that states how you would want to be cared if you become unable to speak on your own behalf and is completed before a medical issue arises. Each state may have their own document available as do many end of life organizations, however, there is no wrong form to complete. Having this document in place is important for many reasons. First, it allows you to appoint who you would like to have advocate for you. This is specifically important should you choose or prefer not to have your next of kin or a spouse handle these responsibilities. The AD will take you through a series of questions about medical care preferences within certain situations, but it’s not limited to just the questions asked. You can include any information you feel is imperative to your care. The more detailed you can be, the better prepared your advocate will be when major decisions need to be made. Once your form is completed, you will share with the person(s) you have chosen to speak on your behalf so they are clear on what you are asking of them and your wishes. Once everyone has signed your AD, you can then share it with your physician, family members and keep an accessible copy on hand. Having an AD in place allows you to stay in control of your care and ensure that the right people in your life can speak for you. I strongly encourage everyone, not matter your age or health status, to have an AD in place and can take you through the process, step by step.
